The following is an unedited transcript of the news release from the National Institute for Statistics and Economic Studies.

In January 2008, household consumption expenditure on manufactured goods, measured in chain-linked volumes, declined by 1.2 %, after +2.1% in December (trading days and seasonally adjusted figures).

In January, expenditures on durables fell down sharply (-3.9% after +4.1% in December), due to car purchases’ bounce back (-8.7% after +6.7% in December), which contributed -1.4 point to the growth of the total. However, expenditures on equipment goods kept increasing, at a slower pace than in December though (+0.8% after +1.7%).

In January, consumption expenditure on textile-leather grew at the same pace than in December (+2.3%).

Finally, household consumption of other manufactured goods went slightly down in January (-0.5% after +0.5%).
