| Final consumption expenditure of households turned out to be an impediment to growth in the fourth quarter, being 1.3% lower than in the year before. |

| As already reported by the Federal Statistical Office in its first release of 14 February 2008, the German economy continued to grow in the fourth quarter of 2007. After price, seasonal and calendar adjustments, the gross domestic product rose 0.3% on the third quarter of 2007. However, economic growth slowed down considerably towards year-end. In the third quarter, the GDP had increased by as much as 0.7%. |

| Hopes of stronger high street sales failed to materialise in February and instead sales growth came to a halt, while the prices of goods rose strongly, the CBI said today. A third 34% of respondents to the latest Distributive Trades Survey said year-on-year sales volumes rose in the first half of February, while 36% said they were down. |

The UK’s deficit on trade in goods and services is provisionally estimated to have narrowed in June to £3.6 billion, from a deficit of £3.7 billion in May. In second quarter, the deficit on trade in goods and services narrowed to £11.7 billion, from an £12.3 billion deficit in the previous quarter. |

| Between May and June output of the manufacturing industries rose by 0.2%. There were no significant increases but the largest non-significant increase was in the transport equipment industries, where output increased by 1%. There were no significant decreases. |

| In the three months to June the seasonally adjusted index for retail sales at constant 2000 prices was 1.1% higher than the previous three months. |

| Between May and June the volume of sales rose 0.2%, reflecting increases in all sectors except food stores and non-store retailing and repair.The volume of sales in predominantly food stores in the latest three months decreased by 0.1% over the previous three months. In predominantly non-food stores sales were up 1.9%. |
